(BLOOMINGTON) - Sam Brinegar of Bloomington suffered a lacerated spleen after the vehicle he was riding in was in a collision Saturday afternoon on Ind. 37 at Smithville Road.
According to Monroe County Chief Deputy Mike Pershing, a 2002 PT Cruiser driven by 17-year-old Sarah Brinegar, of Bloomington, was crossing the highway when it entered the path of a 1997 Chevy truck driven by 46-year-old Rebecca Howell, of Bedford.
Both vehicles then struck a 2006 Elantra driven by 66-year-old Cynthia Hendricks, of Bloomington.
Sam Brinegar, a passenger in Sarah Brinegar's car, was taken to IU Health Bloomington Hospital and underwent surgery Saturday evening. Sarah Brinegar and Howell were both taken to IU Health Bloomington Hospital for treatment of their injuries. Hendricks did not require treatment.
Pershing said Howell was cited for having expired license plates and no insurance.
According to Sgt. Michael Dorsett, Hendricks was stopped at the Smithville/Ind. 37 intersection waiting to turn north on Ind. 37. She said the PT Cruiser was heading eastbound on Smithville Road when it attempted to cross the median at Ind. 37. Dorsett said Howell tried to brake but could not stop in time. The impact of the crash sent both vehicles into the Elantra.
