(BROWNSTOWN) - Jurors in the trial of 24-year-old John Shoultz III began hearing testimony Tuesday in his murder trial.
Aubrey Woods of the Tribune reports that, according to a probable cause affidavit, Shoultz told police his mother had shot his father at their home in Crothersville in May 2009.
He later admitted to police that he had shot his father. Shoultz's attorney, Ethan Bartanen, claims it was an act of self-defense.
According to the probable cause affidavit, the younger Shoultz had taped his mother's chihuahua's legs together and his father got angry and stormed into his room with a straight razor in one hand and the dog in the other.
The son then fired one shot into the ceiling warning his father to stop and then fired three shots at his father because he feared his dad was going to cut him or his girlfriend with the straight razor.
Police say after he shot his father he then hid the 10 millimeter Smith & Wesson handgun he used in the barn.
The trial is scheduled to last a week.
