(SALEM) - Laura Mahuron’s future with Salem Community Schools will be unknown until at least mid-July.
Stephanie Taylor Ferriell of the Leader-Democrat reports that Superintendent Dr. Lynn Reed said Tuesday, the corporation is con-ducting its own investigation regarding the alleged graduation party at the home of Laura and John Mahuron.
There was underage drinking on the premises and the Mahurons have been charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor, a Class A misdemeanor. Eleven teens over the age of 18 have been charged with minor consumption, a Class C misdemeanor.
In addition to reviewing the police report, Reed said, "We have board policies, and we're looking at our different board policies as well. The process is underway and it does take time to go through everything."
The Salem School Board meets the second Monday of the month. Reed said the review process would not be completed by the June meeting, but she does anticipate having it completed by the July 9th meeting.
Regarding the actions of Mahuron, a teacher with 12 years experience at Salem, as well as any students involved in the incident, Reed said she's prohibited from commenting due to FERPA, the Federal Education Right to Privacy Act.
"We're still bound by privacy laws as to any reasons why or why not [students] were allowed to do or not do something. That's frustrating to many people. Many times there are community members who know something or information is shared by a family that the school can't verify one way or another other because we're not allowed to give out that info.
