(BLOOMINGTON) - Dillion Barrett, of Frankton, admitted during an interview with police that he had his friend Matthew Hosier in a head lock, choking him when both men fell in the water at Four Winds Marina Saturday night.
29-year-old Hosier did not resurface. Monroe County Coroner Nicole Meyer,says Hosier died from asphyxia due to choking and drowning.
According Indiana Conservation officer Roger Goldman, Barrett and Hosier had been on Lake Monroe with friends on a rented pontoon boat and the two got into an altercation when they returned to the dock.
Goldman says Barrett continued to choke Hosier after the two fell in the water. When Barrett did release Hosier he did not resurface. Divers later recovered his body near the boat dock.
Barrett was arrested shortly after that and charged with involuntary manslaughter and battery resulting in serious bodily injury. But Chief Deputy Prosecutor Bob Miller has reviewed the police reports and interviews and determined the appropriate charge is reckless homicide.
