(BEDFORD) - Bedford Police arrested 37-year-old Eric Kern, after he allegedly entered the Walgreen’s Drug Store armed with a gun around 8 p.m. Monday.
Parsley says Kern didn't have a gun, but a small pipe under his shirt.
"But he was telling employees he was armed with a gun," Parsley says. "The suspect stole several hydromorpone pills from the store."
After robbing the store, Kern fled and police found him in the area of 14th and L streets.
According to Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley an officer was in the area when police received the call saying a man with a gun was in the store.
"One officer went down the alley and two people pointed out which direction the suspect had ran north on M Street," Parsley says. "The officer then went to there and another person told police the man ran east on 14th Street."
There the officer found Kern in the parking lot of Circle K.
"The officer ordered the suspect to stop," Parsley says. "The man refused and he had to be forcibly stopped."
As the officer was arrested Kern, he swallowed the hydromorpone pill that he had stolen from Walgreens.
Kern was taken to IU Health Hospital and kept overnight because he had ingested the drugs.
Kern has been charged with armed robbery and possession of a scheduled II controlled substance.
