(MITCHELL) - From a dozen people came nearly 100 ideas on how to improve, enhance and create a better community in Mitchell.
Krystal Shelter of the Times-Mail reports that the city of Mitchell, through its grant-writing cooperative called the Administrative Resources Association, is in the process of collaborating with the community to draw up a community needs assessment.
Two community planning sessions were scheduled to draw opinions on what that plan should look like. The city staged its first session Tuesday with a dozen residents in attendance. A second session is slated for 5 p.m. Tuesday in the community room at Bloomfield State Bank.
Organizers want community members to come to the meetings, fill out a survey and offer up ideas to better Mitchell. Then those ideas will be teamed with funding possibilities, a time frame and realistic potential before they're turned into a workable plan.
During Tuesday's session, attendees pointed to the need for jobs, workforce training, a recycling program and better sidewalks. Concerns included increased generational poverty, lack of education and neighborhood flooding.
But attendees also described the good things about Mitchell, including its numerous resources for those in need, friendly people, community spirit, dedicated volunteers and faith-based community.
Those who can't attend the session can fill out a survey now online by visiting https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/cityofmitchell, or grab a copy of the survey at the Mitchell Community Public Library, the Greater Mitchell Chamber of Commerce, City Hall or at the Lawrence InterFaith Endeavor food pantry. Surveys can be turned back in at City Hall.
For more information, call the mayor's office at 849-5161.
The plan will only be successful if a good portion of the community's population gets involved in the outline process.
The sessions last less than an hour and allow residents to fill out a quick survey, but also take a hands-on approach to offering ideas by asking them to name their biggest concerns for Mitchell, the city's best attributes and what they'd like the city to look like in five to 10 years.
