(BEDFORD) - Mayor Shawna Girgis, Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce President Jamie Medlock and Lawrence County Economic Growth Council Executive Director Gene McCracken departed from Indianapolis Monday morning for an 11-day trade mission to China and Japan.
They are traveling with Mike Kern, a Bedford native and vice president of Gaylor Inc., and led by Larry Ingraham, President of Ingraham and Associates.
Girgis said the delegation's primary goal is to establish new friendships and open doors of opportunity.
The group will spend five days in china and five days in japan. Medlock says the local leaders have undergone intensive training in preparation for the mission.
On Wednesday, the local delegation will join Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman at a banquet celebrating the 25th anniversary of Indiana's sister-state relationship with Zhejiang.
The gift she is presenting to the province was made in Bedford by Matt Bruce of Architectural Stone and will be on display in the province.
Girgis emphasized building rapport is important to Asians considering business partnerships outside their continent.
The delegation is scheduled to arrive at Shanghai's Pudong airport today and rest prior to a full day Wednesday that begins with an economic and trade seminar and concludes with the anniversary celebration.
