(MEDORA) - Trustees of this community’s school approved a policy tightening its dress code.
"When you have air conditioning, there is no reason for shorts or inappropriate clothing," Medora Community Schools Superintendent Tom Judd told trustees during their meeting in the media center.
Aubrey Woods of the Tribune reports that the changes mean junior and senior high school students will no longer be allowed to wear shorts.
Principal Brad McCammon said the policy also eliminates "exces¬sively short" dresses and skirts as well as form-fitting attire.
"Dresses and skirts must be knee-length or they can wear capris," McCammon said.
Jeans with holes above the knee also will not be allowed. McCammon said, in answer to a trustee's question, that there have been issues concerning inappropriate attire and it's mainly about students and their desire to show they can wear such clothing at school.
The school will keep some clothing on hand so that any student found violating the code will not have to go home, Judd said.
A couple of trustees questioned Judd and McCammon about addi¬ional costs parents may face with the change.
Judd said parents would be noti¬fied of the changes in time to buy appropriate clothing. He also said the dress code changes regarding shorts would not apply to elementary students.
"Because they go outside for recess," Judd said.
Other business:
In an unrelated matter, McCammon sought a second policy change requiring sixth - and seventh- grade students to remain in the cafetorium during the entire lunch period. Those students could leave the school in the past to visit stores in the community.
McCammon said parents he has talked with seem supportive of the change because they will know their children are at school instead of out in the community.
