(SALEM) - The East Washington school board has appointed Steve Darnell to replace Cathy Egolf as superintendent of schools in a special school board meeting Monday evening.
"His leadership skills [made him stand out]," said school board president, Brian Motsinger. "From the very beginning, he was our candidate ... From the get-go, he was in it for the right reason."
Interim superintendent Phyllis Amick commended Darnell for his experience at all levels of K-12 education, his expertise in budgeting, his interest in new technology and his work at the Indiana Department of Education.
"He's got great mannerisms with other people, his communication skills, he's going to be able to talk to all of our groups and he's coming from a school the same size as ours made him a good fit," said school board vice president Cecil Shrout. "He's a very approachable, down-to-earth team leader."
Darnell will take his post on July 17. He his currently the superintendent of Smith-Green Community Schools in northern Indiana and has served there for three years. He has had leadership positions at various levels of education.
A former Lilly Endowment Teacher/Administrator Creativity Award fellow, State and National Hall of Fame Inductee for Business Professionals of America, former Assistant Principal of the Year award recipient and Finance Committee Chair/Offering Counting Coordinator for the past 20 years at his church, the school board is confident that he will be an asset to East Washington.
He and his wife, Debbie, have been married for 28 years and the couple has two sons, Bruce, 27 and Mike, 26.
