(BEDFORD) - Bedford officials will meet this morning at 9 a.m. to discuss if the city’s fireworks will be set off on July 4th.
Bedford Fire Chief Jon Wagner and Mayor Shawna Girgis and other officials will meet at city hall to discuss safety concerns because of drought conditions.
"We are concerned and rightfully so," says BFD Chief Jon Wagner. "But since we have had this rain and the safety steps the department has in place things should go smoothly, but we will discuss the issue and see what happens."
Wagner says the department has steps in place to prevent a fire from starting.
"We have hydrants in the area and will have 4-wheelers with tanks on them there and the small rescue engine," Wagner says. "We will also foam the area the day before. The foam makes water wetter."
Wagner says there are concerns because it is so dry. The rain on Sunday hit ground that soaked it up quickly and with temperatures hovering in the upper 90s and 100s it won't take long for the ground to dry again.
"If we go forward with the fireworks and the winds start blowing I will put a stop to them," Wagner says. "It will just be too dangerous."
Wagner has concerns of sparks starting a fire near the railroad tracks.
"That would be a dangerous situation and we can't have that," he added. "We will just have to wait and see. We should be able to pull this off, but we will discuss it and should have an answer by this afternoon."
