(BLOOMINGTON) - Bloomington police apprehended a suspect Sunday morning in the Saturday afternoon armed robbery of Karton King Discount Tobacco and Liquor on South Walnut Street.
Scott Afanador, 35, of 2442 S. Winslow Court, was arrested on preliminary felony charges of armed robbery and criminal recklessness.
Patrolling the area around looking for a blue Chevrolet Aveo, which witnesses described the suspect as running toward after the robbery, police found a vehicle matching its description around 8 a.m. at Henderson Court Apartments. After maintaining surveillance on the vehicle, officers made a traffic stop at 275 E. Winslow Road and identified Afanador as matching the description of the suspect and a composite sketch released the day before: a white man with short hair and an estimated 5-feet-8-inches to 5-feet-10-inches tall.
When officers searched the vehicle, they found a 9 mm, semi-automatic pistol. A shell casing recovered from the scene - fired into the floor after the clerk said they thought the gun was a fake - matched the weapon.
Police said Afanador was alone when he entered the Karton King at 2:56 p.m Saturday, pointing his weapon and demanding cash. No other suspects are being sought at this time.
