(BLOOMINGTON) - A 4-week-old boy was flown by helicopter to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis with head trauma Friday night.
Bloomington Police arrested his parents, 20-year Jonathan Terneus and 18-year-old Shawnna Lloyd.
Terneus told police he had hit the baby and that Lloyd has been abusing the child since they brought the baby home.
Both were charged with battery, neglect of a dependent and false reporting.
According to Bloomington police Sgt. Dana Cole says, detectives were called to IU Health Bloomington Hospital Friday evening after hospital staff contacted them about a 4-week-old baby boy with "substantial injuries."
Lloyd took the infant to the hospital and told them the baby had fallen from his father's lap.
Terneus later arrived at the hospital and first told police the same story.
The couple was taken to the police station for questioning. Terneus later told detectives he had been sleeping at Lloyd's house in the 2300 block of South Winslow Court and was awaken by the baby's crying around 9 a.m. Terneus told police he first placed a hand over the baby's mouth. Cole says that caused bruising to the baby.
Terneus then went back to bed and was awoken a second time to the baby crying. He told police that he hit the baby in the head with his left hand, which caused the infant to hit his head on a wall.
Police say Lloyd confessed to the same account.
Terneus told police Lloyd started abusing their son when he was about a week old, by choking the baby and causing the baby to gag.
The baby boy was flown by helicopter to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. There was no update available on the infant's condition.
