(SCIPIO) - A Butlerville man was killed and others were injured in a crash involving four vehicles Tuesday afternoon in Jennings County, police reported.
Jennings County Sheriff's Office responded to the wreck on State Road 7 north of Scipio in Geneva Township around 3:24 p.m. The road was closed for several hours while police worked the accident scene.
Charles W. Welch, 55, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
According to a news release from the sheriff's office, Welch was driving a 1998 Toyota southbound and crossed the center line, colliding head-on with a northbound semitrailer driven by Daniel W. Gruner, 48, of Trafalgar.
The semi, which was hauling several rolls of steel, burst into flames upon impact, flipped off the roadway and collided with a southbound 2008 Chrysler driven by Vicki L. Girt, 57, of North Vernon, police said.
By the time emergency responders arrived, the semi was engulfed in flames, but Gruner was able to escape, police said. Both Gruner and Girt were taken to the hospital for treatment of unknown injuries.
A 1995 Oldsmobile driven by Gary P. Harris, 62, of North Vernon also was involved in the wreck. The vehicle sustained minor damage from debris caused by the wreck.
Deputy Anthony Maberry, an accident reconstructionist with Jennings County's Sheriff's Office, is leading the investigation.
Assisting at the scene were Indiana State Police, Center and Geneva Township Fire Rescue, Indiana Conservation Officer Zach Walker, Indiana DepartĀ¬ment of Transportation and Rescue 20 EMS units.
