(BEDFORD) - A fire destroyed between 2 to 3 acres of grass on County Complex Road Monday afternoon.
Firefighters from Shawswick, Guthrie, Marion and Oolitic responded to the blaze that got close to mobile homes in Pride Estates Mobile Home Park and to the County Complex buildings.
"Our major concern was the complex building that houses community corrections," says Shawswick Volunteer Fire Department Chief Bobby Brown. "We were able to keep the fire from the building, but there was some heat damage to the outside of the building, fading the paint."
Brown says the ground that burned is owned by Phil Thorne.
Another concern was the mobile homes on Glendale Way.
"We had about four or five mobile home that the flames got to within 30 feet and that was a little too close for us," Brown says. "But we all worked together and were able to knock down the flames and get the fire under control in less than 30 minutes."
One Marion VFD firefighter was injured while battling the blaze.
"He got some debris under his safety glasses," Brown says. "He had his eye flushed and was able to remove the debris and was back at the scene."
The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
"We have a good idea how it started, but we are still looking into it," Brown says. "We should know more later. People need to remember it is still very dry out there and fires will spread quickly."
