(LAWRENCE COUNTY) - ISTEP-Plus exam scores - given to students in grades three through eight — show a mixed bag of results.
At Mitchell, overall scores climbed again. The results show 79.2 percent of Mitchell students passed the English/Language Arts portion of the test, 80.7 percent passed the math section and 71 percent passed both segments.
At North Lawrence, overall scores dipped a bit after three years of gains. The results show 74.8 percent of North Lawrence students passed the English/Language Arts part of the test, 76.9 passed the math portion and 66.6 percent passed both segments.
The state averages were 79 percent for passing English / Language Arts, 81 percent for passing math and 71 percent for passing both segments. The state figures show improvements over the past four years, according to the state Department of Education.
St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School recorded overall pass rates of 88.2 percent for English/Language Arts, 90.6 percent for math and 82.4 percent for both segments. Those were the highest school scores in the county.
Springville Elementary School posted the highest scores among the county's public schools, with more than 82 percent of students passing the English/Language Arts and math portions of the exam.
According to the Department of Education, Burris Elementary School recorded the largest gains in the county, with a nearly 9 percent jump in students passing both the English / Language Arts and math segments of the test. The school has a 52 percent free and reduced lunch population.
