(BEDFORD) - Last Saturday, just after the 50th Anniversary of the death of Trooper
Robert C. Gillespie in Lawrence County, the Bloomington Indiana State Police District honored their Fallen Hero with a First Annual Memorial Softball Tournament bearing his name.
The ISP Districts were represented by Bloomington, Pendleton, Putnamville and Jasper. The Bedford Fraternal Order of Police also participated in the event at Murray Park in Bedford. The Pendleton ISP District emerged as the champions.
Scott & Dennis Gillespie, sons of Trooper Gillespie, each threw out the first pitch before play began on both fields.
Funds that were raised went to the Trooper Robert C. Gillespie Memorial Scholarship presented each year to a Bedford North Lawrence High School student pursuing a career in Law Enforcement.
Master Trooper Jan Kruse, lifelong family friend of the Gillespie Family and son of ISP Sgt Sam Kruse (deceased) wanted to thank all who helped make the tournament a reality. Trooper Kruse also said "the brotherhood and esprit de corps experienced in honoring Trooper Gillespie was abundant and the officers look forward to participating next year and the years to come".
