(SEYMOUR) - Seymour may not have its annual Fourth of July fireworks show this year because of the ongoing heat wave and drought conditions.
However, the city's Parks and Recreation Department will offer half-price swimming and free music Wednesday to help residents celebrate the holiday. Kim Ingalls, assistant parks and recreation director, said Friday a determination will be made Monday on whether the fireworks show will happen.
"We're going to hold off until Monday to see if we get any rain over the weekend," she said. "But if we don't, then it will probably be canceled or moved to Labor Day."
The annual fireworks show draws huge crowds of 3,000 people or more to Freeman Field park and along State Road 11.
City Parks and Recreation director Jeff Vance said it is the second largest event in Seymour behind the annual Oktoberfest. Many cities and towns are canceling, postpon¬ing and in some cases trying to ban fireworks from communities over fears they could set dry grass and vegetation on fire. Hope and Brown County as well as numerous communities in central Indiana have cancelled or postponed firework shows.
But even without fireworks, residents and visitors to the city can still take part in fun, safe and budget- conscious activities Wednesday.
From noon until 5 p. m., enjoy half price admission at Shields Park Pool. Adults and children age six and over will pay just $1 to swim and children age 3 to 5 are 50 cents. Children younger than three get in free.
The pool will not be open for the evening session.
Before or after taking a dip, you can head over to the shelter house and bandstand area for the free music in the park concert featuring Brilyn Terrell of Seymour play¬ing from noon to 1 p.m. and the popular, local TOG Band performing from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
The concession stand will be open for patrons to purchase food and drinks, but those attending are encouraged to bring coolers and picnic lunches and lawn chairs to enjoy the concert.
To keep the activities safe and family-friendly, alcohol is prohibited and people should not bring their own fireworks.
