(BLOOMFIELD) - Every road in Greene County is getting a new sign, and so is the Greene County Courthouse.
Anna Rochelle, of the Greene County Daily World reports, during their meeting on Monday, the Greene County Commissioners got an update on the Greene County Sign Modernization Project currently underway replacing road signs, and they voted in favor of erecting a new sign at the courthouse.
When the suggestion was first made that the courthouse needed a sign, Commissioner Kermit Holtsclaw did not seem to be in favor of the idea.
"We've gone 100-plus some years without one," said Holtsclaw.
Nevertheless, after a discussion, Holtsclaw voted in sync with Commissioners Rick Graves and Steve Lindsey to approve the new sign.
Although local people know the courthouse building well, discussion included the fact that out-of-area visitors frequently are confused and do not know the building is the courthouse. There is no sign.
The new sign will be erected in the yard on the east side of the building, a location which should also help to end some confusion about which door is the main entry.
The sign will read "Greene County Courthouse" chiseled into a 3-foot by 8-foot piece of stone that will be surrounded by brickwork.
The commissioners gave approval for a cost of up to $5000 but since some people are expected to volunteer some of that in materials or labor, the cost is not expected to go that high.
The commissioners were updated on progress on the other sign project, the Greene County Sign Modernization Project, by Brad Isaacs of Janssen and Spaans Engineering, Inc. out of Columbus, Ind.
Isaacs, who serves as the project engineer, is overseeing the work which involves approximately 8000 pieces of signage that will replace and update all of the signs on county roads.
"Production has picked up. More crews will be coming in and the project is going well," said Isaacs. "The official completion date is March 12, 2013, but the plan is to wrap it up this fall."
With the one exception of an on-site foreman, Isaacs said the labor is being performed by local people hired out of the union hall in Bloomington.
Some of the signs have already been placed and Isaacs said there have been some concerns expressed by landowners about the location of some placements. However, Isaacs said they must adhere to Indiana state specifications.
Isaacs said he would be happy to answer any questions landowners have about the signs. To make contact, questions should be addressed to the Greene County Highway Department and they will forward the information on to Isaacs.
