(MITCHELL) - The Mitchell school system plans to spend just more than $20 million next year.
Superintendent Steve Phillips said spending levels in the various school funds are about the same as they are this year.
"This is permission to spend," Phillips told board members Monday. As is typical, he said, school budgets are proposed at higher levels because they can be lowered, but not raised, later in the process.
He also told board members that the school's total property tax rate "has gone down the past two, three or four years," and he said that trend might continue.
In following standard procedure, board members agreed to advertise the budget in the Times-Mail legal notices on Aug. 15 and 22. They scheduled a budget hearing for 6 p.m. Aug. 27 in the administrative offices. They plan to adopt the budget during the regular school board meeting at 6 p.m. Sept. 10.
An Indiana public school system's budget is made up of several funds. Generally speaking, money from one fund cannot be used for a purpose outside of that fund. For example, money raised for the debt service fund, used to pay off school debts, cannot be used to pay teacher salaries.
