(MITCHELL) - Members of the city of Mitchell’s Board of Public Works and Safety approved spending nearly $38,000 on a plan for bringing city-owned buildings, parks and infrastructure into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Krystal Shetler of the Times-Mail reports that Mitchell Mayor Gary Pruett says that by the end of this year, the city must have a plan in place on how it will comply with the federal ADA rules for accessibility.
To be compliant, the city must update all of its sidewalks, curbs, buildings, parks and other taxpayer-owned facilities.
First Group Engineers of Indianapolis submitted a proposal to the city to draw up the plan for compliance.
If First Group does the inventory of what is non-compliant, the proposal would cost the city about $43,800. If the city does the inventory itself, the price drops to $37,800.
Street Commissioner Larry Harris will do the inventory, then pass the information on to First Group in order for the engineering firm to be able to draw up a plan for compliance. First Group says it will have a plan completed for the city within 120 days.
