(BEDFORD) - With Mitchell students returning to school today and North Lawrence students returning tomorrow, police are reminding motorist to slow down and pay attention to students and traffic in the morning and afternoon hours.
North Lawrence Community Schools transportation director Darren Waggoner says about 3,100 kids ride buses to and from school each day and hundreds drive to the high school.
Waggoner says there will be 83 NLCS buses on the road Tuesday morning.
The busiest times are between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. and then from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Both Bedford and Lawrence County officers will be increasing patrols around the schools.
"Motorists need to be aware of buses stopping and picking up and dropping off students,"
Lawrence County Sheriff Sam Craig says. "The first few mornings of school is always a little confusing and congested so motorist need to be careful and pay attention to traffic and students getting in and out of vehicle and walking to and from school."
Craig says motorist should also stay alert when rounding curves or cresting hills for stopped school buses and students crossing roadways when boarding or exiting the school bus.
High school student also need to make sure they keep a safe distance between vehicles while traveling to and from school and to pay close attention while driving.
Waggoner says most of the accidents happen when students are leaving school because they are in a hurry to leave.
