(WASHINGTON) - A Washington couple was air lifted to St. Mary’s Hospital in Evansville after a Sunday motorcycle accident near Jasper.
John Auberry, 52, was in critical condition Monday, according to a hospital spokesperson, and his wife, Sherry, 52, was listed in fair condition. According to Monday Facebook posts by family member Dana McEvilly-Miles, Sherry has "road rash," a compound fracture of her left leg, a broken pelvis and injured hand. The pelvic and hand injuries are expected to heal on their own, and surgery "went well" to repair the broken leg.
"John has a brain injury," according to the posts. "They're not sure of the extent, but they're encouraged he responds to commands."
He also has a burn on his thigh, and a broken leg, ribs, and back.
Family and friends say the couple have a long road to recovery in front of them and are thankful for everyone's prayers.
According to a report by the Dubois County Sheriff's Department, the accident occurred around 2:15 p.m. on SR 56 east of Kellerville Road.
The Auberrys were eastbound on the highway and had rounded a curve when, as they exited the curve, the 1986 Honda motorcycle they were riding started to drift off the roadway. It struck a mailbox and came to rest in a ditch.
Haysville First Responders and Memorial EMS assisted Dubois County Sheriff's deputies at the scene.
