(BEDFORD) - The American Bikers Aimed Toward Education are pleading for public assistance as they look forward to raising $10,000 to make Christmas brighter for deserving boys and girls in Lawrence County.
They've already staged one roadblock in Mitchell, and they've got two more scheduled in Mitchell and two planned for Oolitic.
That alone, however, won't cover the cost of providing Christmas gifts, so they're having a motorcycle ride in conjunction with Bedford's M&E Honda.
Mary Lou Harris, one of the local volunteers says all the money raised stays in Lawrence Count by buying toys locally and giving gifts to about 150 Lawrence County children.
Toys will be given away at a Christmas party on Dec. 23.
The motorcycle ride is sponsored by the Friends of Lawrence County Motorcyclists and M&E Honda in support of Lawrence County ABATE and the United States Marine Corps Reserve's Toys for Tots of Lawrence County.
The ride will kick off at noon October 20th. To participate in the ride, riders need to make either a monetary donation or the donation of an unwrapped new toy valued at $10 or more.
To participate in the "Fun Run," riders can pay an additional $5. Trophies will be awarded to top finishers in each category.
Food will be available, and there will be a silent auction and music by a disc jockey at the conclusion of the ride. To get more information about the event - or to make a contribution - call Bill Hanners at 797-6780.
