(BLOOMINGTON) - After a standoff that lasted more than five hours, police apprehended a 41-year-old Bloomington man who was threatening to commit suicide.
Bloomington Police Sgt. Faron Lake say officers were notified at 10:43 p.m. Saturday, that a man in the 1600 block of South High Street was threatening to shoot himself.
Police were able to get the man's mother, who also lived in the home out and homes in the area were evacuated. Police also blocked the intersection of High Street.
While doing all that, police had the man on the phone. Then after several hours, the man stopped talking to negotiators.
Lake says the Critical Incident Response Team was called and they entered the home and deployed pepper spray gas into the man's bedroom..
Lake says the man did come out of the bedroom, but he wouldn't comply with police and officers had to shoot the man twice with sponge rounds - non-lethal blows that stunned the man.
He was apprehended at 4:22 a.m. Sunday and was taken to IU Health Bloomington Hospital for a mental evaluation. Lake says no charges have been filed at this time.
Police did not find a gun.
Lake says the man was involved in a similar standoff in February in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. In that incident he did have a gun.
