(BLOOMINGTON) - Dr. Kamal Tiwari with the Pain Management Center of Southern Indiana was sentenced in federal court to three and a half years in prison Tuesday.
Tiwari, 60, also ran a Fourth Street office in Terre Haute when he was charged back in 2010.
He pleaded guilty last spring to health care fraud resulting in serious bodily injury and illegal distribution of drugs. The rest of the 13 federal charges against him were dropped.
Judge Sarah Evans Barker, federal judge for the southern district of Indiana, also ordered him to pay $1.3 million in restitution to Medicare, Medicaid and Anthem Blue Cross. She also said he must serve at least 85 percent of his prison term.
n a lengthy statement during his sentencing hearing, Tiwari apologized and took full responsibility for his actions. He also cried.
He will report to prison in six weeks and most likely will be assigned to the federal prison in Terre Haute.
