(SEYMOUR) - A portion of State Road 11 in Jackson County was dedicated to a fallen Indiana State Police Trooper Earl L. Brown during a Friday morning ceremony.
Trooper Brown was shot and killed while responding to a report of a suspicious person walking with a shot gun on State Road 11, on August 31, 1955.
When Brown and Columbus Police Officer Bill Weddle arrived the man handed over his shotgun without a struggle.
As Trooper Brown began searching the man for more weapons, the man pulled a pistol from his hip pocket, shooting Brown twice in the chest, killing him.
Officer Weddle returned fire, shooting the man three times, critically injuring him.
During Friday morning's ceremony at the Seymour INDOT office, mile marker 44 to 45 was officially dedicated as the "Trooper Earl L. Brown Memorial Mile." Signs are already posted informing drivers of the change.
