Residents Will Soon Be Able To Pay Probation And Post Bond With Credit Cards

(BEDFORD) - The Lawrence County Commissioners approved and signed a contract with Government Payment Services Inc. to provide a credit card service that would allow residents to pay court and probation fees, and post bond with a credit or debit card.

Currently, residents must pay cash when posting bond or paying fees. County Clerk Myron Rainey, hopes to have the system up and running soon, but first employees will have to complete training.

* The Williams Covered Bridge renovations are almost complete. Lawrence County Project Coordinator Bob Dillon says crews are putting up a heavy duty chain link fence on the inside of the bridge to protect the walls from vandals and they are treating the wood with a flame-retardant spray. Dillon says the bridge should be open to the public in about two weeks.

* Lawrence County Deputy Coroner Rob Herr asked for $32,736 to purchase four elevated autopsy tables for the new county morgue and other needed equipment. He also asked a little more than $28,000 to complete renovations to the new morgue. Herr says the floor of the building needs to be leveled and the bathroom facilities in the building had to be improved to meet the American Disability Act standards.

"We have to do what needs to be done to make the morgue more efficient and meet federal and state guidelines," said Commissioner Dave Flinn. "Once the morgue is complete, it will allow the county to get a monthly income to recoup some of the costs."

* Sheriff Sam Craig told commissioners there were 108 inmates in the jail, 17 are women and 7 were DOC inmates.

* Homeland Security Director Valerie Luchauer asked the commissioner to allow her to apply for an Emergency Performance Grant. The grant, if awarded would pay part of Luchauer's salary. She also asked the commissioner to sign a District 8 Task Force Application which would allow Luchauer to be deployed to other counties in the District if an emergency was need. However Luchauer says she would probably not ever be deployed because she could coordinate events from Lawrence County to assist the other agencies.
