(SALEM) - A Salem man was seriously injured when he struck a deer early Wednesday morning.
Stephanie Taylor Ferriell, of the Leader-Democrat reports, Billy Wilkerson (age unavailable) was westbound on State Road 56 West near the intersection with Possum Hollow Road, said Captain Roger Newlon of the Washington County Sheriff's Department.
Newlon said Wilkerson, who was driving a Harley Davidson motorcycle, struck a deer in the roadway. The crash was reported at 6:50 a.m.
The impact threw Wilkerson from the bike. "He slid several yards," said Newlon. Wilkerson's injuries included severe facial trauma.
He was transported from the scene by the Washington County Ambulance Service to St. Vincent Salem Hospital then transferred by air ambulance to University of Louisville Hospital.
Newlon said Wilkerson was conscious and able to communicate at the scene.
