(SALEM) - 35-year-old Marc Cook, of Salem, was sentenced to 38 years in prison after being convicted of two counts of molestation.
Stephanie Taylor Ferriell of the Leader Democrat reports that Cook was convicted by a jury for molesting his girlfriend's daughter, who was under the age of 14-years-old when the crime was committed. Houchin says the incidents happened over the course of a year.
Police learned of the crime after the girl confieded in a friend about the incidents and that friend told her mother, who then called police. Cook was arrested June 6.
Judge Larry Medlock sentenced Cook to 40 years on the A felony and six on the C felony, to be served consecutively for a total of 46 years. He suspended seven and a half years. In Indiana, prisoners receive one day's credit for each day served as long as they have good behavior.
The girl testified during the trial and Houchin says she did very well.
Houchin said he hopes the long sentence sends a message to would-be offenders.
