(BEDFORD) - Saturday marks the official start of United Way campaign drive that provides a year of funding for nonprofit agencies that serve youth, senior citizens, victims of domestic violence, members of the military, and assist the low income and people in crisis.
The official dates for the campaign are Sept. 1-Oct. 31. Also known as the blackout because agencies are prohibited from any individual fundraisers.
This year's campaign goal is $202,013. Lorri Hamer, executive director of United Way of South Central Indiana, said the board chose the amount because members wanted to make a connection to the campaign year and, perhaps, make people take notice of the amount.
A car cruise-in Sept. 22 will be the official kickoff event at Thornton Park. The public can browse classic cars while enjoying food, music and learning about United Way agencies.
The success of United Way campaigns hinges on workplace campaigns, whereby employees pledge to support United Way via payroll deduction.
Hamer said one of her campaign goals is to help employers re-energize their campaigns.
