(BEDFORD) - Bedford North Lawrence teacher and their spouses can now use their photo ids to attend athletic events free of charge.
Mike Lewis of the Times-Mail reports that without passing a formal policy, the North Lawrence school board gave its blessing to the plan last week.
The passes do not cover children or other family members. They cannot be used at Indiana High School Athletic Association tournament events, where the rules are set by the IHSAA. And they do not apply at other school events, such as plays, where admission is charged.
School Board President Brad Flinn and board members expressed support but were concerned that the change might take a financial toll on the athletic departments of the various schools.
Bedford North Lawrence High School Athletic Director Jeff Callahan will keep a "pencil on the bottom line."
Board member Gary Holmes predicted a different outcome. Letting employees and spouses into the games will encourage them to bring their children, and that will mean more money spent not only at the gate, but also at concession stands. Holmes added it also shows that the board appreciates the teachers.
