(MITCHELL) - The state fire marshal is investigating the cause of a fire that destroyed a duplex in the 100 block of Dale Street, Thursday night.
Firefighters from Mitchell Volunteer Fire Departments were notified of the blaze at 5:58 p.m. Marion VFD was put on stand-by.
" We were on the scene within three minutes," says Mitchell VFD Assistant Chief Fred Cassidy. "The building was engulfed in flames. We were able to get it under control and contained, but the building is a total loss."
All the occupants of the single-story duplex were able to escape and no one was injured, Cassidy says.
"The one at 115 Dale was destroyed, but the residents of 121 were able to go in and salvage a few things. The ceiling collapsed in that one. The residents at 115 Dale are staying with relatives, and the occupants of 121 were provided housing by the Salvation Army."
Cassidy says the cause of the fire is under investigation.
"The state fire marshal was on the scene last night," Cassidy says. "No information about the owner of the building or the occupants of the two housing units can be released at this time. I know there are a lot of rumors out there, but for now we just can't release any information, because this is an on-going investigation."
Cassidy says firefighters were on the scene battling the blaze and extinguishing hot spots for about an hour.
