(HELTONVILLE) - Firefighters from three departments battled a woods fire Thursday afternoon.
According to Pleasant Run Fire Chief Steve Nolan the fire started at the home of Jay McCullough in the 2700 block of Pleasant Run Road at 3 p.m.
Firefighters from Pleasant Run, Shawswick and the U.S. Forest Service responded.
"The couple had burned brush about a week ago and the winds kicked up yesterday and restarted that fire," Nolan says. "The wind helped that fire spread quickly and it went down over the hill and into the woods."
Nolan says about an acre of ground burned.
"It could have been a lot worse," he added. "It was so windy it could have gotten away from us quickly. But everyone did a great job and we got it contained and out quick."
Firefighters were on the scene for about an hour making sure all the hot spots were extinguished.
"That time of day is rough, because people are between shifts," Nolan says. "All the departments are short of help on day shift. But thanks to our mutual aid agreements we can all work together to taken care of the residents of Lawrence County. I greatly appreciate all the firefighters and TOPES for helping out."
