(BEDFORD) - A fire Friday morning ravaged the modular home of Kris Mathews.
Firefighters from Shawswick, Guthrie and Marion Township were called to the blaze in the 2400 block of Vinegar Hill Road at 9 a.m. this morning. TOPES was also at the scene providing assistance.
"The neighbor, Connie Parkes heard popping and cracking and rushed to call 911," said Shawswick Medical Officer Jim McFarland. "By the time she got back to the window and looked out the roof of the home was engulfed in flames."
McFarland says the home was a total loss.
Mathews was at work when the blaze started and her dog was at the groomers, according to McFarland.
"We were in what we call a defensive attack," McFarland says. "When we arrived the roof had collapsed. There was a really nice garage about 10 to 12 feet from the home so we focused on protecting it. Some of the siding melted, but we were able to save the garage."
McFarland says the cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
"The state fire marshal has been contacted and will be on the scene Monday," McFarland says.
Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital ambulance and Lawrence County police officers were also on the scene.
