(ORLEANS) - An Orleans man was injured after the vehicle he was working on fell on his chest Sunday afternoon. He later died at the hospital.
According to Orange County Rural District II Fire Chief Bill Sallee, David Pittman was replacing the starter on his Subaru station wagon when the vehicle slid off a scissor jack and fell on him.
When firefighters arrived around 2:17 p.m. at Pittman's home on County Road 100 West, they found Pittman trapped under the vehicle.
"We used the Jaws of Life to lift the car off of him," Sallee says. "He had a faint pulse and we began CPR."
Sallee says the axle of the vehicle landed on Pittman's breast bone.
"The good part was I don't think it was a crushing blow," Sallee says. "But the pressure of the vehicle was suffocating him
Pittman was flown from the scene to the University of Louisville Hospital.
"When he left he had a good pulse and they were still helping him breath," Sallee says. "As of last night he was doing all right."
