(BEDFORD) - The Limestone Girls Club and Thornton Memorial Boys Club boards of directors agreed to merge, Saturday.
According to officials at both clubs, activities will continue as usual while a new, unified organization is being formed.
Bruce Deckard, president of the Boys Club board, and Angie Lewis, president of the Girls Club board, issued a joint press release Saturday.
"Both boards have been working since August to review financial information, research facility options and review programming and staffing trends for the clubs," it reads.
"The combined organization will serve to provide a more consistent and effective service to the community, and it opens up options for ensuring all kids have access to the best of both organizations. The boards saw data that supports more effective utilization of each club's resources, facilities, equipment and staff. There is a strong belief that the community support needed for the organization to thrive will materialize as these clubs work together for the service of all kids."
A steering committee from both clubs will form a new board and create a new nonprofit organization.
Meanwhile, the staffing and programming of the two clubs will continue as usual.
The agreement came because both are facing financial struggles. Before the merge, each club's board assigned a four-member committee to explore ways the clubs could work together in the short term and possibly merge to create one club. A community committee, including one Girls Club board member and four members of the community, has also been involved in the talks.
