(DUGGER) - The controversial slice of land in Sullivan County, that’s been home to a cross for two years, has a new owner.
The large "Jesus Saves" cross is on S.R. 54 on the west end of Dugger.
Earlier this year, an out-of-state group said the cross was in violation of the law, since it was on town-owned property.
So the town board decided to sell it off.
At Monday night's meeting, one bidder came forward, with the minimum $1,450.
The offer was approved, and now, husband and wife Dugger residents Louie and Sherry Bonham are the land owners.
Louie was actually behind the building of the cross originally, and is now starting the Dugger Cross Christian Education Fund to help local kids go to school.
"We've got one from church, he just started and he's having a tough time. And you know there's not gonna be a whole lot of money but there's gonna be enough to help," said Louie Bonham. "It will go to a good cause. I know that for sure."
The town board also discussed a potential new cost-saving contract with Duke Energy for the cemetery lights, as well as an ordinance to get golf carts registered and safe for roads.
