(MITCHELL) - Downtown Mitchell will be abuzz with activities Saturday with events aimed at helping those in need throughout the community.
Dubbed a "caring, sharing and giving" event, activities will include giving out free coats and food, and raising money for ministries that support those in need.
Dose of warmth
The Mitchell Church of Christ will have its annual coat give-away event in the old church building, 1004 W. Main St. Free coats for children and adults will be offered from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Joining the Church of Christ will be members of Woodville Baptist Church, who will pass out hats and gloves.
Toys for sale
ReGeneration, a thrift store at Seventh and Main streets that serves as the funding arm for Capstone Ministries, will have its annual toy sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This will take place inside the Mitchell Church of Christ's Family Life Center, located behind the old church building at 1004 W. Main St. Toys will be on sale for about 10 cents on the dollar, compared to retail prices. Families can get good, quality toys at reasonable prices with the profits going back into the community through Capstone Ministries.
Church members will be selling pulled pork by the sandwich or pound to raise money for their 2013 mission trip to Honduras.
Time to read
The Mitchell Community Public Library will have a booth at the coat give-away to promote its "1K B4 K," or "One Thousand Books Before Kindergarten," preschool reading program that is a joint collaboration between the library and Capstone Ministries. The program helps local families prepare their children for the first year of school, by providing free books and reading support in the form of logs, tips and rewards.
Also, at the library, there will be a family holiday festival from 2-4 p.m. Enjoy carols sung by the Orange County Players, craft an ornament for the library's trees, decorate cookies and record a holiday video to appear on the library's Facebook page. No registration is required.
Lunch on us
Jacob Finger United Methodist Church is offering a free lunch. The church annex will be open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a soup and sandwiches lunch that will be offered free of charge to all. Families are encouraged to stop in.
Santa's arrival
The Greater Mitchell Chamber of Commerce invited Santa Claus to stop by its offices at Sixth and Main streets Saturday, as well. Santa will be taking requests from local children from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Parents are invited to bring their children and their cameras to take pictures.
