(MITCHELL) - Hunters helped reduced the number of deer at Spring Mills State Park and the Cave River Valley area, near Campbellsburg, Tuesday and Wednesday.
Fifty-one hunters entered Spring Mill and 13 hunted at Cave River Valley Tuesday. On Wednesday there were 24 at Spring Mill and 8 at Cave River Valley.
Spring Mill Property Manager Mark Young says in the two days of hunting, 48 deer were culled between the two properties, with 28 taken at Spring Mill and 20 killed at Cave River Valley. Those numbers topped the kills in 2011 when only 34 deer were taken from both properties in the first two days of hunting.
"When you think about it, those numbers are good, especially since we're about 1,300 acres at Spring Mill and about 300 acres at Cave River Valley," Young says.
The park will close again Nov. 26 and 27 for another round of hunting.
Young says different hunters will enter the park.
"When it's done, we'll send our numbers to biologists in Indianapolis and we'll probably have to do another vegetative study in the spring to see how the efforts affected the park," Young says.
Spring Mill will offer a public standby drawing to fill spots left vacant each morning of the reduction. Potential standby participants must apply at Spring Mill between 7:30 and 8:15 a.m., but cannot enter the park before 7:30 a.m. Standby drawings will take place at 8:30 a.m.
Eligibility for those daily standby drawings is limited to Indiana residents who are 18 years of age by Nov. 13, and have any valid license to take deer in Indiana. Indiana residents who possess an Indiana lifetime license to take deer are also eligible.
To participate in the standby drawings at Spring Mill, individuals must present a photo ID and their valid filled or unfilled license to take deer. Applications can include up to three individuals. The number of participants drawn will be based on the number of unclaimed spots for each day; it is not a first-come, first-served process. The need for stand-in hunters tends to increase with each hunt day.
