(BEDFORD) - Mitchell High School Team 2, sponsored by Holmes Hardware, reigned supreme Thursday night winning the 2012 Teen Brain Games title by beating the Lawrence County Junior Leaders team sponsored by the Adamson Agency, 110-90.
Jeff Routh, of the Times-Mail reports, the game was close throughout and the Junior Leaders team had a chance to tie if they could have answered the final question and bonus correctly as time expired. But they were unable to come up with the title of a three-book series by Lois Lowry about a future society that converts everyone to "Sameness."
To get to the championship game, Holmes Hardware defeated Pynco, Inc. (St. Vincent Irish Knights 7), 210-20 and Day & Carter Mortuary (Oolitic Middle School Super Baby Llamas), 120-70. Adamson Agency beat Hoosier Hills Credit Union (Orleans High School B Team), 80-60, and Bud and Barbara Sargent (Orleans High School A Team), 180-60.
In game one Thursday, Day & Carter beat Bedford Federal Savings Bank (Bedford Middle School), 100-70. In game two it was Holmes Hardware over Pynco, Inc. In game three, it was Adamson over HHCU; and in game four, Bud and Barbara Sargent beat Curtis Orthodontics, 130-80.
The Holmes team is comprised of MHS seniors Jack Enlow, Curtis Waggoner, Rachel Embry and Dallas Cobb, who are currently tied for top academic honors in their class.
"We were pretty confident coming into tonight's round," said Enlow. "Rachel was a little nervous, but the rest of us thought we'd do well."
They felt the Asian Capitals and Exact Years categories were the hardest.
"We are happy to represent Mitchell in a positive way," Embry said.
The Adamson Agency team was composed of home-schooled students from Lawrence County Christian Home Educators. Team members were Logan Jefferson, Natasha Aubrey, Coleen Gabhart and Emily Carroll.
"We didn't know what to expect," Aubrey said. "None of us had participated in the games before. But it was fun."
They also felt the Exact Date category was difficult, but they also struggled with the sports questions, since none of them are sports buffs.
The team members are also very involved in 4-H.
Holmes Hardware jumped out to an early 10-0 lead when Enlow knew Muammar Gaddafi was the deposed President of Lybia. Adamson took the lead, 20-10 when Carroll knew Sarah Palin was John McCain's running mate in the 2008 presidential election and the team added the bonus answer of Tina Fey to the question of what actress portrayed Palin on Saturday Night Live.
Enlow tied the game by knowing that 1969 was the year man first landed on the moon and he added that 1968 was the year Martin Luther King was assassinated. Enlow also knew Johnny Cueto was a 20-game winner for the Cincinnati Reds and the team came up with R.A. Dickey as a 20-game winner for the New York Mets.
Holmes built its lead to 80-20 before Adamson began chipping away. Carroll pulled the Junior Leaders to within 10 points by knowing God changed Abram's name to Abraham and his wife's name was Sarah for both the toss-up and bonus questions. Enlow put MHS Team 2 up by 20 points by knowing Sandy was the name of the storm that hit the east coast in October and the team could have sealed the win if they had known the category of the storm when it hit the coast.
That gave Adamson a chance to tie as time expired. Moderator Lee Cuba had begun asking the question about the Lois Lowry book series before the buzzer sounded, so it was the last question of the round. Neither team was able to come up with the answer, and Holmes Hardware held on for the win.
The winning team won $300 and individual medals. The team will be inscribed on a plaque that is kept at the museum. The team will also be an automatic entry in the adult Brain Games in May of 2013.
The runners-up received $200 and medals.
