(BEDFORD) - Nine high school senior girls from Bedford North Lawrence and Mitchell high schools will compete for scholarships Saturday during the annual Distinguished Young Woman program.
The program, formerly known as Junior Miss, will award $6,050.
According to Mike Mullis, member of the steering committee, the scholarship amount is $600 less than last year. That is because they have lost a few donors because of a rough economy.
The number of young women seeking the awards is also down.
Mullis says teens are busier and applying for this scholarship does take time and commitment.
Mullis says the girls must fill out the application and write an essay. Participants will be judged on fitness, creative and performing arts, self expression, interview and scholastics.
It's the program's 36th year in Lawrence County. The winner will advance to the state program, which will take place in February in Kokomo.
Last year's winner was Sutton Roach, graduate of Mitchell High School
