(BEDFORD) - Tessa Makximenko is the Distinguished Young Woman for Lawrence County. Makximenko, a senior at Bedford North Lawrence High School, walked away with $3,000 in scholarships after Saturday night’s program at the Performing Arts Center.
Aside from being named Distinguished Young Woman for which she received a $2,500 scholarship, Makximenko also won $100 awards each for self-expression, youth fitness, creative performing arts, scholastic achievement and judges' interview.
Jocelyn Schlegel, a senior at Mitchell High School, received $1,500 in scholarships. She received $1,200 as first runner-up, and received $100 awards each for self-expression, youth fitness and the judges' interview.
Emily Karr, also a senior at MHS, was named second runner-up, which earned her a $600 scholarship. She also received an additional $100 for her creative and performing arts ability.
Ivy Murphy, a senior at BNL, was named third runner-up, earning her a $300 scholarship. She also received a $100 award for scholastic achievement.
Brittany Blanton, a MHS senior, won the Spirit Award from her peers, netting her a $250 scholarship.
More than $6,000 in scholarships were awarded during the competition. Nine girls from both BNL and MHS competed for the awards.
