(BEDFORD) - Bedford Firefighter extinguished a fire at 1619 F Street early Saturday morning and the occupant was arrested.
Bedford Police officers arrested 32-year-old Tammy Schmidt on charges of disorderly conduct and public intoxication. She was taken to the Lawrence County Security Center at 3:50 a.m.
According to BFD Battalion Chief Steve Haverly, the fire started in a laundry basket that was in the doorway to the kitchen.
"The cause of the fire is still under investigation," Haverly says. "We know it started in the laundry basket, which had clothes in it and was accidental in nature. The occupant couldn't help us much and tell us much about the fire."
The fire traveled from the laundry basket, up the wall and into a light switch and then to the ceiling.
"But it only burned a small hole in the ceiling and didn't get into the attic area," Haverly says. "We were able to extinguish it with a water extinguisher and small hand line and then ventilated the home."
Haverly says firefighters did two searches of the home.
"The occupant told us there were other people inside," Haverly says. "So we did a search and didn't find anyone. A man who was on the scene tried to convince her there was no one else there and that the people she was claiming were there had went to another home, but she didn't want to believe him, so we did another search and found no one."
