(BLOOMINGTON) - During the three months of the ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge, the ASPCA asked for photos of dogs and cats that benefited as a result of shelters’ life saving efforts.
They received hundreds of adorable submissions from across the country but narrowed them down to 40 photos that they thought best represented the Challenge spirit. They then asked shelter supporters to vote for their favorites.
Jennifer Ashcraft, a City of Bloomington Animal Shelter volunteer, adopted her first dog - a 3-year-old chihuahua mix named Reese - during the Challenge. She submitted his photo to the contest and it was selected as one of the 40 finalists. Following the completion of the photo contest voting on Nov. 14 the ASPCA announced that Reese received the most votes for the North Central region, winning $2,000 for the Bloomington Animal Shelter.
"We are thrilled at Reese's win on behalf of the Shelter but we are even more thrilled that Reese and Jennifer are such a good match," said Laurie Ringquist, the Shelter's director. "This is what the Challenge is all about, matching up people and animals to form lifelong bonds."
The Shelter plans to add this $2,000 award to the $5,000 they expect to receive for meeting the goal of the Challenge and saving 300 more lives than last year. These funds will be used to aid in renovating and expanding the older cat holding areas in the Shelter. "These renovations will allow us to keep our cats healthier and happier while they await adoption," Ringquist said.
