(BEDFORD) - Tuesday morning, the Lawrence County Commissioners are scheduled to an update on the county morgue project from Coroner-elect Robert Herr.
This project started when St. Vincent Dunn Hospital officials decided the facility would no longer maintain a morgue.
The morgue was then moved to IU Health Bedford Hospital, but they told Lawrence County Coroner John Sherrill the county needed to find somewhere else to take the counties deceased because the hospital says their facility is not equipped to deal with the odors from some of the bodies brought to the morgue.
Instead of finding somewhere else to take the deceased, the county decided it would be cheaper to build a facility and charge other counties to use it.
The county is converting a portion of a county owned building, located behind Dr. Craton's office in Dunn Plaza, into a morgue.
Tri-County Builders won the bid to renovate the building.
The commissioners' meeting will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the courthouse.
