(BEDFORD) - Volunteers with Bedford’s Elks Lodge 826 - with the help of some other community partners - filled dinner baskets for dozens of local families at Christmas.
They have been doing this for years.
This year the effort also received help in the form of a grant from the international Elks organization, according to Joey Elliott of the local Elks.
The Elks took that grant and local donations and turned them into food baskets, providing all of the groceries needed to prepare a Christmas feast.
The local JayC Foods outlets helped with the basket effort, he said, as did Bedford Federal Savings Bank.
They were able to do 40 baskets at $150 each. The Elks also went beyond the staples.
Each wrapped box also included a stocking full of candy and a $50 Walmart gift card.
The Elks work with schools, the Salvation Army and the Family and Social Services Administration to get baskets to families who are in need during the holidays.
