(BEDFORD) - A community of runners came together Monday evening to pay tribute to Norm Taylor, who died a week ago while exercising near the Avoca Fish Hatchery.
Organized by Dr. Jim Sowders, the event was attended by more than 100 people, and more than 80 of those were running.
The group raised about $1,200 for a scholarship fund in Taylor's name.
In addition to runners, Sowders said many non-runners who were friends with Taylor came out.
Taylor, 59, was widely known for his longtime work with the North Lawrence schools and as a local history enthusiast.
Sowders said he and Taylor ran together a lot several years ago before Taylor became so heavily involved with re-enactments.
The seed of Monday's outing was planted on one of those runs.
Not long after Sowders had lost a family member, he and Taylor went for a run on an unseasonably beautiful December day.
During that run, Taylor told Sowders when he died he would just like people to go out on a run.
With the blessing of Taylor's widow Annette, Sowders began planning Monday's event. And it included a personal touch - Runners were dressed in Purdue attire. Taylor was a Purdue fan.
