(MITCHELL) - Today, one lucky little girl will spend the day with members of the Mitchell High School varsity basketball squad.
Krystal Slater, of the Times-Mail reports, the team will have breakfast with the little girl at Arby's, in Mitchell, courtesy of Dwight Dunbar and the D&P Foods folks, before taking her shopping for Christmas.
Team member Courtney Perkins came up with the plan while enlisting the help of the Varsity Club's Clothe-A-Child program, Coach Matt Sowders and the rest of the team.
Courtney is a cadet teacher in a Mitchell kindergarten class and created a special bond with the little girl, who is in foster care.
The Varsity Club is giving the girls $150 to spend on the kindergartner. In addition, the girls are using profits from T-shirt sales to buy her a doll during the shopping trip.
"I'm really proud of Courtney for thinking up this project and the team being on board to help out," said Shari Perkins, Courtney's mother. "Coach Sowders is a great influence on them in supporting community projects like this."
In addition, the child will be invited to serve as a "water girl" during an upcoming basketball game, where she'll be given a team shirt to wear while helping out the players.
While the varsity team takes the girl shopping, the junior varsity players will be volunteering with a local organization that day to further the team's community service efforts.
What a great way for the girls to give back this holiday season.
