(UNDATED) - Wintertime is here and health-wise that means one thing: it is flu season. Indiana state health officials are urging Hoosiers to take preventative steps as influenza or the “flu” can be dangerous.
People at the most risk for developing dangerous complications from the flu are pregnant women, young children, people with chronic illnesses and/or compromised immune systems, and the elderly.
State Health Commissioner Dr. Gregory Larkin says, it is not too late to get the flu vaccine and he emphasized "Getting the flu vaccine is the best way to avoid the flu," Larkin also says that everyone should also practice frequent, thorough hand washing and avoid touching their eyes, nose or mouth without washing their hands first.
The Department of health also urges Hoosiers to help stop the spread of the flu by coughing or sneezing into their sleeve or a disposable tissue and staying home from work or school when ill. Dr. Larkin says that currently, Indiana is having normal flu activity, but the Indiana State Department of Health is expecting to see an increase in flu cases as the season continues.
