(BEDFORD) - Bedford North Lawrence Administrators says the 12-year-old boy who carried a handgun to Bedford Middle School Friday will probably be expelled.
The 12-year-old showed the weapon to at least one other student in a rest room Friday.
That evening, the student told his mother about seeing the gun and went to the police department.
Police and school officials recovered the .25-caliber handgun at the school and the boy was arrested on a charge of taking a firearm to school.
He is being held at the Jackson County Juvenile Detention Center.
Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley says the boy had no intention to harm anyone. Parsley says the boy stole the gun from his grandfather's house during Christmas break.
Parsley says the boy took the gun to school to show it off to friends because he thought having a gun was cool.
NL Superintendent Dennis Turner says this incident will be among topics at a meeting of NL school leaders next week. Officials will meet to discuss the situation and how they handled it.
